Creative Symbiosis

AI and human creativity shaping each other over time.

Creative Symbiosis draws on the lived experiences of 35 international artists working with AI across music, visual art, design, film, and performance.

About the Research

What is Creative Symbiosis?

Creative Symbiosis is a practice-based research project investigating how artists, designers, musicians, filmmakers, and performers build sustained creative partnerships with AI. It draws on 33 in-depth interviews with 35 international practitioners.

The research follows how creative relationships with AI evolve. How practitioners cultivate surprise. How they adapt to unpredictability. How agency develops between artist and system over time.

From this empirical foundation, the project proposes a framework for designing AI systems that grow with their users, support co-evolutionary practice, and strengthen human creative capacities over time.

Creative Symbiosis
Why It Matters

Three Communities, One Conversation

Artists working with AI hold knowledge that researchers and developers need. Researchers studying creativity hold frameworks that practitioners and developers can build on. Developers shape the systems both groups depend on. These conversations rarely happen in the same room. Creative Symbiosis brings them together.

Artists Working with AI

Practitioners experimenting with AI in their daily work, holding the practical knowledge of what these systems do, where they break down, and what they could become.

Creativity Researchers

Scholars studying creativity and cognition, building the theoretical frameworks that explain how AI is changing creative thought, agency, and practice.

Technology Developers

Engineers and designers building creative AI tools, working at the point where research and practice meet the constraints of what can be built.

The Book

Creative Symbiosis: Mind, Body and AI in Co-Evolutionary Creative Practice

Artists do not adopt AI in a single decision. Their relationships with these systems develop slowly, shaped by curiosity, frustration, unexpected discovery, and sometimes deliberate rejection.

The book follows that arc. It asks what embodied skill means when machines can generate what once took years to learn, where agency actually sits in human-AI creative work, and what it would take to build systems capable of genuine creative partnership.
